Too many hats
I found out today that an eighth grade student at my school shot himself on Friday. The student body is, understandably, quite upset. Our counselor is doing double-duty as the "test coordinator" for tomorrow's writing TAKS, which, if you've been reading the papers, is no cakewalk. All day I've been in "test mode," dolling out last minute tidbits of wisdom and praying they're listening. "I'm sorry you're upset. I need you to focus on the task at hand because this is the last time you can ask questions before The Test." As if I should expect to have anyone's attention. It didn't really hit me until after school as I was driving home, what had actually happened. He was fourteen. Maybe fifteen.
I have mixed feelings about turning twenty-five.

Me and Jamie, Cambridge (?), 1995. (Aww... look at the flannel!)
p.s. I'm pretty sure that's the natural hair color. Around this time our friend Dave made the mistake of referring to me as "a brunette" and I went ballistic. I've had a complex ever since. The end.
ReplyDeleteI'm sorry to hear about the student. Rough stuff. Sorry you have to be in test mode... BUT, in other news...
ReplyDeleteHAPPY BIRTHDAY, you fruity blonde bombshell!
See you tonight!
That was Lana, btw.
ReplyDelete1. Dave is not our friend.
ReplyDelete2. You neglect to mention that you're under the "umbrella of lurrrrve."
3. That's in England! I was just there yesterday!
4. Happy birthday.
Mary -- happy birthday!
ReplyDeleteP.S. I'm sorry to hear about the student's death. Hope everyone is handling it OK...
I'm so so so sorry about the death of one of your school's students.
ReplyDeleteOn a seperate note...Oh my god - get that picture off here! (we've got so many more recent, better ones!)
Anyways, Happy Birthday (again)! Also, H was right, that was the umbrella of luurrrve, and I won't even go there on the "Dave issue" anymore [rolls eyes].
~Jamie :)
Happy Birthday! (Still intend to send that e-mail...)
