weirdos

I returned home at 1am to a "gathering" in the courtyard outside my apartment.

"Hey!" yelled one of the men, as I rounded the corner.

"Hi," I replied.

"Ummm... we borrowed your chairs."

I looked to their collection of seating circled around the metal table. Two of the chairs looked quite familiar. A quick glance at my patio confirmed that they were, indeed, my chairs.

"We'll, umm, return them right now. We knocked."

As if this made it ok. I looked at the rug which had been thrown to the ground. I looked at my lit apartment, my cat crying in the wide window. They moved the chairs inside the gate and I locked it immediately.

"You know, I leave the gate unlocked because I assume that my own neighbors are going to respect my property."

There was no reply. I locked the door and closed the blinds tightly. Afterwards I heard them laughing outside.

Am I uptight, or, like, wtf?

I would borrow chairs from my neighbor's patio, I think. I would probably think you were being up-tight, but I know you, and I know you're not uptight. (To quote Donnie Darko's dad, "You're not a bitch... you're bichin', but you're not a bitch.")

Let's think-- why did it bother you that they borrowed your chairs? I am curious. I want to avoid annoying my neighbores and understand why I would think something was okay that someone else, whose views I respect, woudln't.
