All Cynicism Aside

Having now worked at a public university for nearly a year, I have to say that being around college students fills me with hope and admiration. I watch how they collaborate, how they treat each other and support each other, how they laugh and love, and I think, "the kids are ok."

Sometimes I worry that they don't see value in public service -- they want to work for start-ups, they want to wear jeans and work 24/7 for a short while and sell early and make $$$. They want to work for consulting firms and companies that make you sign NDAs and IP agreements and other acronyms to even have a conversation with them. That's not the world that inspires me, though I understand the appeal.

I hope they will take their skills and put their inventions and ideas in the public domain, for all people to benefit from. Maybe they'll form non-profits and B Corporations. Maybe they'll run for office and effect broad changes. Maybe they'll teach. For a little while, if not longer. Maybe that's something I can help influence, if I find the right megaphone.

Anyway. I don't have a lot to say about stuff. These days I'm mostly listening. But I thought you should know that the children, who are our future, they are good people.

Love,
Mary
