The scene: check-out line @ Fiesta, new cashier. My basket contains milk, wine, bread, and about a dozen odd vegetables for making Pho.
Ronalfo: [Holds up produce bag] What are these? Are these onions?
Me: Green onions, yeah
Ronalfo: Hey, Tiffany! What's the code for green onions?
Tiffany: 4592
Ronalfo: Ok, and these?
Me: Bean sprouts
Tiffany: 2395
Ronalfo: ??
Me: Oh lord... baby bok choy. You are going to hate me by the end of this transaction.
Ronalfo: Are these "snap peas" or, uh, snow peas?
Me: Ummm...
Tiffany: 3892
Later:
Me: Those are jalapenos.
Still later:
Me: That is cilantro.
This lesson in produce brought to you by the fruitcake brigade. We're coming back for veggie tacos. Study up, Ronalfo.
I can relate. I had hell of a time with some fruits and vegetables when I was a cashier at Shoppers. Some of us grew up poor and didn't have a variety of fruits and veggies in our diet.
ReplyDeleteI still can't tell what cilantro looks like because I don't know how to cook with it.
I had a student named Ronalfo.
